    About the Book

    Edit

Winter in America and the Summer of Dreams is a firsthand account of Harlem during the early years of hip hop. It's an adventure from the perspective of a teenager who took a train from Sacramento, California to Harlem in 1977. The author uses an imaginary museum (The Parmelian Prints Archive) to conduct a tour leading to a series of remarkable photographs that capture a time when hip hop was largely unknown outside of New York City. This book is bulging with original paintings, drawings, and photographs focusing on a number of important topics, such as the January 6 Insurrection and Negro League Baseball. There is art and historic photographs that have never been published on topics such as Disco King Mario, Gill Scott-Heron, James Baldwin, Tokien Joe Ashwood, elephant stampedes, the Vietnam War, Donald Trump and Muhammad Ali. The King, the Queen, the Ace of Diamonds and all their royal friends make an appearance in this festival of truth and light. These paintings lead readers to the main show, which is the photographic essay of Harlem: Winter in America and the Summer of Dreams. This book is nearly fifty-years in the making and is carried by a single roll of film taken largely during the winter of 1978. This book along with its photographs refute many false claims that have become popular about the origins of hip hop. It sets the record straight from a completely different perspective than one would imagine. And unlike the lightweights of hip hop, it's heavy like a brick because it's loaded with factuality.
