    About the Book

Toronto is the largest financial center in Canada and the second largest in North America, after New York City. At the peak of commuting, it was estimated 250,000 people came into and out of the financial district on a daily basis. By using documentary, still photography, my goal with this project was to experience as many aspects of the commuter life as possible and understand how it felt, to work and temporarily exist in the realm of tall office buildings.

In this series I wanted to be part of the story. I wanted to experience the life of a daily commuter and understand the characteristics of the financial district. Through the camera I hoped to document this lifestyle and bring some clarity to a phenomenon that although seems mundane is a regular part of life in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). The project began in 2016 and was paused during the Covid Pandemic (March 2020) as lockdown stopped the swarms of people going to the office. As people gradually worked, the way back into the office, I resumed photographing the project in the summer of 2022, reaching its completion in early 2023. The commute has changed during the latter stages, with fewer people having to make the 5-day a week commute. Yet numbers are slowly building and at some point, down the road, I presume the commute will be just as busy as it was when I started the project in 2016.

The project has gone through much iteration. From a total number of photographs of over 100,000, a tight edit was made which morphed into the Bay Street Series and one of Candid people photographs. After much consideration and tons of editing I decided to be looser final selections and concentrate on telling the story, the way I had envisioned in the beginning. All my photographic projects have had a life of their own when moving towards completion. The final editing process takes many turns until I finally settle on numbers and some kind of sequence. This series is no different, taking many twists and turns resulting

    Randall Romano Photography
    Douro Dummer, Ontario, Canada

Randall has over 40 years experience in photography, having worked for 35 commercial and editorial clients over the years, as well as, being obsessed with photography since he was a teenager. Currently he is passionate about documentary street photography, captured on Canadian streets. This genre of photography requires diligence, persistence and fast reflexes to capture a fleeting moment in time between the urban environment and people. It is rare to capture an exceptional photograph, yet when successful, the image can be unique with gestures, expressions, and stories standing the test of time. Randall is active curating and participating in local photographic exhibitions, as well as teaching photography through presentations to camera clubs and through written articles and books. He lives on a country property near Peterborough, Ontario with his wife Catherine
